Recipe of the month

Get all of your five a day in one hit with this fragrant, low fat vegetarian curry.

Butternut Squash Curry

Ingredients

200g brown basmati rice
1 tbsp olive oil
1 butternut squash, diced
1 red onion, diced
2 tbsp mild curry paste
300ml vegetable stock
4 large tomatoes, roughly chopped
400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
3 tbsp fat-free Greek yogurt
Small handful coriander, chopped

Method

Cook the rice in boiling salted water, as per pack instructions. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan and cook the butternut squash for 2-3 minutes until lightly browned. Add the onion and the curry paste and fry for 3-4 minutes more.

Pour over the stock, then cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the squash is tender. Add the tomatoes and chickpeas, and then gently cook for 3-4 minutes, until the tomatoes slightly soften.

Take off the heat and stir through the yogurt and coriander. Serve with the rice and some wholemeal chapattis if you like.

How fit do you think you are?

Here at Feel Good Fitness our Fitness Testing Support Service, which uses FitnessAge, will allow our trainers to develop a comprehensive training programme based on the results of your fitness test.

Ever wondered whether you’re ageing faster or slower than you should be? After reaching the age of 21, your chronological age has very little meaning or relevance when compared to the physical condition of your body and overall health. Ageing doesn’t happen with just the rising and setting of the sun, but rather is heavily influenced by how you treat your body

So what Is FitnessAge?
FitnessAge is a breakthrough fitness assessment programme that inspires and motivates real change. FitnessAge provides a fun and easy to understand fitness assessment experience.

Age vs FitnessAge
A 42 year old can have a FitnessAge of 64 or 24, depending on how well they have looked after themselves. For example, if a 42 year old had neglected their health and fitness and their FitnessAge is 64, this means they are physically performing at the same level as the average 64 year old. On the flip side, an older individual who is health conscious could maintain the physical condition of a much younger person.

If you would like to book a test or have any questions please email robert.goulding@richmond.gov.uk or call 020 3772 2999.

Please note our fitness testing support service is only available to Feel Good Fitness direct debit and annual members.

Would you like to work as a pool lifeguard?

Lifeguards are an integral part of the staff at a swimming pool. They keep an eye on everything happening from poolside and are qualified to intervene and even save someone’s life if they are in trouble.

Teddington Pools & Fitness Centre runs National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) courses throughout the year.

The role is nearly always offered on a part time basis and this flexibility means it is often taken up by young people at college or university. For many lifeguarding provides an excellent foundation for a career in the leisure industry – many pool managers began their professional careers as a lifeguard.

The UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the UK and Ireland that complies with the industry requirements. This qualification is a recruitment requirement for a number of leisure jobs from Pool Lifeguard to Centre Manager. On successful completion of this course you will be fully qualified to work as a Pool Lifeguard in the UK.

The NPLQ course comprises both physical training and theoretical classroom work, followed by a water based practical test, dry assessment on pool rescue, first aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and lifesaving skills.

All applicants must be 16 years or over.

The next course will be held from Tuesday 7 April to Sunday 12 April.

If you would like to register your interest please email Tony at tony.riches@richmond.gov.uk

Please click here for more information or contact Teddington Pools & Fitness Centre on 020 3772 2999.
